Overview

Phase 1: Arrival + Highway 1

Day 1 — Sat Jul 4: Arrive SFO → Monterey (via Hwy 1) 🛬🌊

🚗 ~120 mi / 2.5–3 hrs (SFO → Monterey, with stops)

  • Land SFO 12:14 PM, pick up rental car (~1 hr)
  • Quick stop: Golden Gate Bridge — drive through for iconic welcome photos
  • Drive south on Hwy 1
  • Half Moon Bay — scenic coastal town, quick lunch stop
  • Santa Cruz — drive through, glimpse the famous Beach Boardwalk 🎡
  • Continue to Monterey — check in (~3 hrs from SFO with stops)
  • Monterey Bay Aquarium (if time/energy allows) — world-class jellyfish, sea otters, kelp forest
  • 🛏️ Stay: Monterey

💡 July 4 note: Long travel day but you’ll be in Monterey by evening, ready for whale watching tomorrow!

Day 2 — Sun Jul 5: Monterey (Whale Watching + Aquarium) 🐋

🚗 Minimal (Monterey area)

  • Morning: Whale Watching 9am (4 hours) — Monterey Bay is one of the best whale watching spots! Book in advance.
  • Lunch at Cannery Row — historic waterfront district, shops & restaurants
  • Afternoon: Monterey Bay Aquarium — world-class (jellyfish, sea otters, kelp forest), plan 2.5–3 hrs
  • Evening: Stroll Cannery Row, grab dinner by the water
  • 🛏️ Stay: Monterey

Day 3 — Mon Jul 6: 17-Mile Drive → Carmel → Big Sur → San Simeon 🏔️🌊

🚗 ~80 mi / 1.5–2 hrs (Monterey → San Simeon, with stops)

  • 17-Mile Drive — private scenic road with stunning coastline, Lone Cypress
  • Carmel-by-the-Sea — European-style village, art galleries, great restaurants (quick stroll)
  • Point Lobos State Natural Reserve — sea lions, tide pools, hiking trails
  • Bixby Creek Bridge — must-stop photo 📸
  • McWay Falls — 80-foot waterfall directly onto the beach (the iconic shot)
  • Pfeiffer Beach — purple sand, Keyhole Arch rock formation (time permitting)
  • Elephant Seal Vista Point (near San Simeon) — hundreds of elephant seals lounging
  • Hearst Castle (San Simeon) — opulent mansion, tour ~1.5 hrs. Book in advance!
  • 🛏️ Stay: Near San Simeon or Cambria

⚠️ Gas up in Carmel/Monterey — Big Sur has few/expensive gas stations ⚠️ Use restrooms when you see them — scarce along Big Sur 💡 Monday = much less crowded than weekend for Big Sur!

Day 4 — Tue Jul 7: San Simeon → Yosemite Valley 🏔️

🚗 ~200 mi / 4.5–5 hrs (San Simeon → Yosemite Valley via CA-46 → CA-99 → CA-41)

⚠️ This is a real 5–6 hr drive day. Add stops + fatigue → you arrive mentally drained.

  • Morning: Depart San Simeon after breakfast
  • Stop in Fresno for lunch & supplies (last major town before the park)
  • Arrive Yosemite ~2–3 PM
  • Quick orientation: Tunnel View — iconic first glimpse of the valley (El Capitan, Bridalveil Fall, Half Dome)
  • Check in, rest, dinner, early to bed
  • 🛏️ Stay: Yosemite area (El Portal recommended, ~25 min to valley)

Phase 2: Yosemite (Trail Exploration)

💡 Lodge note: Staying at the same place for all 4 nights (El Portal/valley area) is optimal — valley is the hub, and Mariposa Grove is only ~1 hr away for one morning. No need to switch hotels.

Day 6~2.75 hoursEasy🟢 Relaxed
Day 75-6 hours (or 3-4 hrs easier option)Mod-Hard🟡 Moderate
Day 8~2 hoursEasy🟢 Relaxed

💡 Pacing notes:

  • Day 5 is intentionally light — good arrival/orientation day
  • Day 7 is the challenge day — start early, well-prepared
  • Day 8 is recovery after Day 7’s big hike
  • Three relaxed days + one moderate day = sustainable family pace |

Day 5 — Wed Jul 8: Yosemite Valley — Easy Trails 🚶

🚗 Minimal (within valley, use shuttle or short drives)

  • Park at Yosemite Village or Valley Lodge early (before 8 AM for parking!)
  • Tunnel View — iconic first glimpse of the valley (El Capitan, Bridalveil Fall, Half Dome). Best in morning light!
  • Bridalveil Fall — easy 20-min walk, first waterfall you see entering the valley
  • Lower Yosemite Fall Trail — flat, paved loop, 1 mi / 30 min. Close-up view of North America’s tallest waterfall (739m, 3 tiers). Family-friendly.
  • Cook’s Meadow Loop — flat paved trail through the heart of the valley, great Half Dome & Yosemite Falls reflections
  • El Capitan Meadow — stand at the base of the world’s largest monolith of granite (914m). Watch rock climbers if any are on the wall!
  • Valley View & Sentinel Bridge — classic photo spots along the Merced River
  • Yosemite Valley Chapel — charming historic chapel
  • Cathedral Beach / Swinging Bridge — more serene river views
  • 🛏️ Stay: Yosemite area (same lodging)

💡 Tip: Rent bikes in the valley (40/day) — great way to cover ground with a teen

Day 6 — Thu Jul 9: Glacier Point + Taft Point + Sentinel Dome 🔭

🚗 ~70 mi / 1.5 hrs round trip (Valley → Glacier Point Rd → back)

  • Glacier Point — breathtaking panoramic views of Half Dome, Yosemite Falls, the entire valley & High Sierra. ~5 min walk from parking.
  • Artist Point — short hike (~1 mi RT, 30 min) with beautiful valley views from a cliff edge. Great alternative to Taft Point if you want something less exposed.
  • Sentinel Dome — short hike from Glacier Point Rd (~1 hr round trip), 360° views from the dome summit. Less crowded than Glacier Point.
  • Taft Point — short hike from same trailhead (~1 hr round trip, 2.2 mi / 3.7 km, 108m gain). Vertigo-inducing cliff edges — the famous “standing on the edge” photos. ⚠️ Be careful!
  • 🛏️ Stay: Yosemite area (same lodging)

💡 Tip: Glacier Point Rd is only open late May to Oct/Nov. Check road conditions.

Day 7 — Fri Jul 10: Mist Trail — The Signature Hike 💦🥾

🚗 Minimal (park at Yosemite Valley Trailhead Parking, or Curry Village)

Friday = no weekday closure issues — the Mon–Thu 7am–3:30pm lower Mist Trail closure doesn’t apply. Check current conditions before going.

Full route (recommended for active family):

  • Trail: Happy Isles → Footbridge → Vernal Fall → Nevada Fall → down via John Muir Trail
  • Distance: 6.4 mi / 10.3 km round trip
  • Elevation gain: 673m
  • Time: 5–6 hrs (hiking + photos + breaks)
  • Difficulty: Moderate–Hard

What you’ll see:

  • Vernal Fall — 97m waterfall, the trail goes right alongside it, you get soaked! 💦
  • Nevada Fall — 181m waterfall, even more powerful, incredible from the top
  • John Muir Trail descent — panoramic views of the valley, less steep than going back down Mist Trail

Easier option (if needed):

  • Hike to Vernal Fall only + Clark Point for views of Nevada Fall, then descend via John Muir Trail
  • ~3–4 hrs round trip, much more manageable

What to bring:

  • 2–3L water per person, energy bars & lunch

  • Hiking shoes (trail is rocky & wet)

  • Quick-dry / waterproof jacket (you WILL get wet near Vernal Fall)

  • Trekking poles (save your knees on descent)

  • Dry change of clothes in backpack

  • Bathrooms at both waterfalls

  • 🛏️ Stay: Yosemite area (same lodging)

Day 8 — Sat Jul 11: Mariposa Grove — Giant Sequoias 🌲

🚗 ~35 mi / 1 hr each way (Valley → Mariposa Grove, near South Entrance)

  • Early start (8 AM): Drive south to Mariposa Grove — home of over 500 mature giant sequoias
  • Grizzly Giant Loop — 2 mi loop, easy, 2 hrs. See the Grizzly Giant (1,800+ years old!) and other massive trees
  • Big Trees Loop — 0.3 mi flat, boardwalk — if you want a quick taste after the main hike
  • California Tunnel Tree — drive-through tree you can walk through
  • Return to valley in afternoon for leisure time or revisit a favorite spot
  • Pack and prepare for tomorrow’s departure to Lake Tahoe
  • 🛏️ Stay: Yosemite area (same lodging)

💡 Tip: Mariposa Grove has a shuttle from the parking area — saves walking uphill. The grove is at higher elevation so it’s cooler than the valley.

Phase 3: Lake Tahoe

Day 9 — Sun Jul 12: Yosemite → Lake Tahoe (via Tioga Pass) 🏔️🌊

🚗 ~150 mi / 4–5 hrs (Yosemite → Lake Tahoe via Tioga Pass, with stops)

📱 Download offline maps — no cell signal on Tioga Road!

  • Early start (8 AM): Check out, drive east on Hwy 120 (Tioga Road) — highest highway pass in California
  • Olmsted Point (~1 hr from valley) — unique reverse-angle view of Half Dome from the east. 5-min walk from parking.
  • Tenaya Lake — crystal-clear alpine lake, perfect picnic spot, short walks along the shore
  • Tuolumne Meadows — vast alpine meadows, granite peaks, completely different vibe from the Valley. Easy walks and photos.
  • Continue east, exit park via Tioga Pass, then north on Hwy 395
  • Stop at Lee Vining or Mono Lake area for lunch/snacks (last services before Tahoe)
  • Drive northwest to Lake Tahoe (via Hwy 395 → Hwy 108/Route 89 or I-80)
  • Arrive Lake Tahoe mid-afternoon
  • Quick visit to Emerald Bay State Park if time allows — iconic turquoise bay, Vikingsholm mansion, Eagle Falls
  • Check in, relax by the lake
  • 🛏️ Stay: South Lake Tahoe area (more lodging options, closer to tomorrow’s activities)

💡 Tioga Road is only open Jun–Nov — check road conditions ⚠️ Fill up in Yosemite Valley — no gas stations on Tioga Road!

💡 Tip: Lake Tahoe is North America’s largest alpine lake — crystal clear and stunningly blue!

Day 10 — Mon Jul 13: Lake Tahoe Exploration 🚢🏖️

🚗 ~50 mi / local driving (around the lake)

  • Morning options:
    • Lake Tahoe Cruise — scenic boat ride on the lake (1.5–2 hrs)
    • Kings Beach — North shore, sandy beach, great for families
    • Sand Harbor — Nevada side, crystal clear water, rock formations
  • Afternoon options:
    • Heavenly Lake Tahoe Gondola — scenic views from above (optional)
    • Taylor Creek Visitor Center — Stream Profile Chamber, see trout underwater
    • Beach time — relax by the lake, swimming if weather permits
  • Evening: Sunset at the lake, dinner
  • 🛏️ Stay: South Lake Tahoe area (same lodging)

Phase 4: Return to SF + Departure

Day 11 — Tue Jul 14: Lake Tahoe → SFO (via Golden Gate Bridge) 🌉✈️

🚗 ~200 mi / 4 hrs (Lake Tahoe → SFO, via I-80)

  • Morning: Check out, depart Lake Tahoe
  • Drive west on I-80 toward Sacramento, then I-5 to SF
  • Arrive SF area early afternoon (~2–3 PM)
  • Golden Gate Bridge — proper visit! Walk or drive across, photos at lookout points
  • Check in near SFO airport
  • Evening: Pack, early dinner, rest before flight
  • 🛏️ Stay: Near SFO Airport

💡 Tip: Staying near SFO eliminates morning stress — 15–20 min to airport

Day 12 — Wed Jul 15: Fly Home ✈️

🚗 ~15 mi / 30 min (Hotel → SFO)

  • Flight departs 11:15 AM — arrive at SFO by 9:15 AM
  • Arrive EWR 8:10 PM (same day due to time zone)
